Postby barracudainlebanon » Sun Apr 08, 2012 7:59 pm

Can i cut 6mm plates to dimension with a jigsaw? or with a big hole saw?

what is the best way of cutting the plates without considering plasma or laser cutting?

Hole saw yes and jigsaw yes. Have done both before on 3mm thick alloy and 5mm thick steel.

mmmm Im running all BAHCO bi-metal SANDFLEX hole saw's the orange ones.

Use cutting Liquid and the right drill speeds and you be fine. I have only ever had to replace 1 but thats on my tube notcher thats had a lot of work.

Never used a carbide tipped hole saw. but had a google nnd it says you can cut Stainless steel plate, F.R.P, Copper plate, Iron plate, Brass plate, Aluminum plate, Alloy steel plate, Electrical controller box, Channel iron.

In my opinion (metal worker by trade )you would be far better off with the 5"grinder with 1mm cut off wheels than a jig saw. The jig saw would be slow and hard going and you will go threw many blades . I done mine with a grinder other methods are plasma oxy or laser the hole saws work fine just lubricate and blow out the cut a couple of times as you drill

Thanks for your opinion but i dont mind working slowly and precisely with the hole saw than working with a grinder, plus im a beginner in metal works so i dont wanna lose my arm :P

Just cut your thumbs off your need them. I cut mine on the weekend only small but still hurt. Bloody alloy sheet edge got me. Holy sh#t last couple of days has been insane finding out everything your thumbs are needed for. I now wear gloves when holding sharp steel.

WEAR SAFETY GEAR. KEEP BOTH EYES ON THE JOB.

Personally I cut all my sheet ali and that with a 1mm cutting disc can get it that neat now especially on the floor for a roof rack I just did that my neighbor thought that I had had it guillotined trick is on chequer plate ali cut with the chequers up so the bit of swarf stuff is on the down side and then very gently go over with a flap disc to get a nice smooth NOT sharp edge ;)
