Postby lauzynas1 » Sun Nov 29, 2009 7:31 pm

Hello to all,
Finally I'v bought the plans and started the build. I have been thinking of building a buggy fo about 4 years. At first I was stucked on piranha but i did not liked its suspension. I was thinking how to put a duble A-arm suspension on it. But then came a new barracuda drawings, It was my dream come true! So, I'v finished my old projects, It took me abuot two years and here I am, the past few days I had the only thought in my head!

Hi Lauzynas1. I would definately use a MIG welder to weld the steel together, as you said, TIG is very time consuming and it also puts a hell of a lot of extra heat into the material which will tend to distort the parent metal a lot more than MIG will. And yes i would recommend an argon/CO2 mix. by the way, its lookin good so far, i cant wait to start building my piranha. jus waiting on laser cutting quotes, and moving house aint helping much.

Hi Lauzynas,

In my opinion you did the best deal, the price is very good for the zx12.
I am looking for something like that the last 8 months but i couldn't find anything good, the cheapest was about 1800 euros without carbs, wires, electronics etc.
Where did you get place for the auction? On e Bay?
I saw that the laser cut plates have more holes to waste away the reduce weight. How did you draw them? How did you find the dimensions? I mean how did you find where is the wright place to make the holes?
I agree about tig welding it is much stronger and strength! The problem is that it takes a lot of time than Tig but the result is beautiful.

There are few places in UK where I buy cars for my break yard in Lithuania. I bought it in the same insurance auction. as I understand we should'nt talk here about cheep parts (the last time I said that I found cheep bearings in my local shop I was deleted), PM me and I'll give you some links.
The laser cut plates was drawn by my. I toock all the holes positions and dimensions from edge drawings then looked to the edge made parts pictures and drawn my plates. I made all the holes to fit metric system components as i live in EU and we use only metric system. The hardest thing was to draw rear uprights becauce these are totaly diferent from the given ones. Now I am wery happy with the result. Yesterday I made all the spacers with lathe for welding. Now its time to learn welding with TIG. once I tryed welding aluminium and it was not so easy. I hawe no idea what parameters to use welding steel. Could some body help me? For example what amperage, polarization or HZ to use welding 5mm steel plate :?:
Thanks :D

I made a list of metric rose joints, I'll try to find it. I will use M12, M16 and M18 rod ends and all other bolts and nuts. the Metric rod ends are twice expensive but I have no UNF tapers and there is a problem to get UNF bolts in Lithuania. I'll change all my lathe drawing too.

metric rod end list:
M12 left hand thread X3
M12 RHT X 1
M16 RHT X 10
M18 RHT X 4
PIRCV bearings are metric. I found front hub original measurements bearings just the seals are left to find. if I do, I'll leave them.

Got my kawasaki this weekend. Engine works nice! :D 29k mls on clocks but runs with no strange sounds. Found tons of extras on it that I did not expected like Powercomander with USB, full titanium evo3 Akrapovic exhoust, alarm system, wavy break discs, sport break lines, heated grips, CF rear fender, blue chain. 8)
allso my tubes were dellivered, so its time to modify my bender and work with the frame.

Last week I'w made all the frame bends, my new bender works nice thanks to matt(boily) for his advice. I placed some pictures in fotobucket. My main rollbar is fully welded now, and I'w started welding the pircv box. I checked others photos before welding mine and spotted that edge made boxes has RHS inserts in the bottom ends. Tony why do you do this? should I place them too? the laser cut box looks strong enouth

Yes, we fit peices of 20x20x1.6 in the three corners, (not the top front where the chain runs through).
Just a little extra stiffness.

Good to see that the bender worked out mate. Makes the job 100 times easier. I couldn't believe how i got on without a bender before :D That style of bender works really well.

here is some pics of my progres :) made with the phone... Rear box now fully welded, and the rollbar is set on the base frame. I'w welded just the outers lines of PIRCV do I need to weld from inside? and i decided to put the PIRCV RHS inserts just in front of the bottom where box meets the base frame.
